Nora Lopez

Nora is a special education teacher at Garfield Heights City Schools. She has two children, one stepchild and three step-grandchildren.

Five years ago, her weight – at more than 280 pounds – was causing considerable fatigue and knee pain. It also interfered with her daily life. When her primary care doctor talked to her about bariatric surgery, Nora didn’t think she was ready – but she made the commitment.

After surgery, she lost 120 pounds and gained more energy. She also is finally able to have knee-replacement surgery.

“I have nothing but praise for everyone I have dealt with at MetroHealth,” Nora said. “They made me feel better now about the time I spend with my kids. And, I also feel better about myself.”

Cheyenne Toole

Cheyenne Toole’s heart troubles date back to 1978. By 2007, obesity had affected her heart health, so she had bariatric surgery at MetroHealth. She was 60 years old, an age when many adults think it’s too late to wrestle with obesity. Now 68, Cheyenne is preparing to swim in the Senior Olympics.

Although some patients struggle to maintain their weight loss after bariatric surgery, Cheyenne uses exercise and behavior tips to manage her weight.

“I jump into the pool and swim a nonstop front crawl for a quarter mile, at least three to four times each week,” she said. “It’s a stress reducer. If I have a bad day, I swim a little faster.”

Like many of us, Cheyenne was raised not to waste food, which was part of her problem. Using food as a reward was another.

“I still reward myself now and then, just not with food,” she said. “This Valentine’s Day, my treat wasn’t candy – it was a new pair of earrings.”

Cheyenne attends a weight loss support group monthly at MetroHealth, where she is an inspiration to the group.

“I try to be a good role model for others going through the same challenges as I do,” she said. “I let them know, if you gain some weight, don’t give up. Set small goals. Call on your higher power. Believe in yourself.”
