Flu season starts in the fall and gets worse when the weather turns cold. That means now is the perfect time to get your flu shot! It’s quick, easy and helps protect you – and people around you like babies, grandparents and anyone with health problems. The flu shot is safe for adults, pregnant women and children 6 months and older.
Why Should I Get a Flu Shot?
The flu is more serious than a cold. It can cause:
- fever
- cough
- sore throat
- body aches
- runny nose
- headaches
- stomach upset (including vomiting and diarrhea)
Some people get very sick and need to go to the hospital. The flu can lead to pneumonia or other infections.
Every year, people miss work, school and fun plans because of the flu.
Flu Shot Q&A
There are a lot of myths about flu shots. Here are the questions we’ve been hearing lately:
Q: If I got a flu shot last year, do I still need one this year?
A: Yes. The flu changes every year, so the shot is updated to match it. Last year’s shot won’t protect you this year.
Q: Can the flu shot give me the flu?
A: No. The flu uses a small piece of the virus that tells your body to fight it. Getting a flu shot is the best way to prevent the flu. It can help cut flu hospitalizations and flu-related doctor visits by more than half.
Q: Are there side effects to the flu shot?
A: Some people feel sore or tired for a day or two. This is normal and means your body is building protection.
