Women experiencing pelvic pain or pressure, difficulty urinating, or incontinence may be anxious or embarrassed to discuss their discomfort with their doctor. However, these symptoms could be a result of pelvic prolapse, a treatable condition that affects up to half of women between the ages of 50 and 79.
What is Pelvic Prolapse?
Pelvic prolapse is a condition where the pelvic floor muscles become weakened and cannot adequately support the weight of the pelvic organs, resulting in one or more of these organs pressing into or out of the vagina. Women who have given birth vaginally, have gone through menopause, or are overweight are most at risk for developing the condition.
While some women with pelvic prolapse feel no symptoms at all, those who do often have:
- Bulging in the vagina
- Pelvic or abdomen pressure or discomfort
- Difficulty urinating
- Constipation
- Leakage of urine (incontinence)
The first step in treating pelvic prolapse is getting the right care, so it’s important to talk to your doctor if you’re bothered by your symptoms. Your provider may suggest options such as lifestyle changes, certain pelvic floor exercises, or surgery.
