Think you’re too young for a mammogram? Think again. Recent guidelines say women should start getting screened at age 40 – even if they don’t have a family history of breast cancer.

Breast cancer doesn’t always come with warning signs or a family history. That’s why screening guidelines recommend women begin annual mammograms at age 40, even if they feel healthy. Early detection is key, and MetroHealth is here to make screening easy, accessible, and effective.
When Should I Get a Mammogram?
MetroHealth recommends that women start getting a yearly mammogram starting at age 40. Why? Because about 75% of women diagnosed with breast cancer don’t have known risk factors. Early detection saves lives – especially when cancer is found before it spreads. At breast cancer’s earliest stages, the survival rate is well above 90%.
Ohio’s new Breast Cancer Screening Law requires coverage of one screening mammogram every year for adult women, regardless of risk factors. MetroHealth’s 3D mammograms are also covered.

Know Your Risk
Some things raise your risk for breast cancer. Some you can change, and some you can’t.
You can:
- Quit smoking or vaping
- Avoid or limit drinking alcohol
- Keep a healthy weight
- Stay active
- Limit chemical exposure (things like pesticides)
You can’t:
- Change your age. Your risk increases after menopause.
- Change your family history. Having a mother, sister, or daughter with breast cancer increases your risk.
- Change your genes (like BRCA1 and BRCA2).
- Change your race – but it matters.
Black women are more likely to get breast cancer under the age of 45. They also have higher rates of triple negative breast cancer, a more serious type. They have the highest rate of death from breast cancer, followed by Latina women. That’s why it’s especially important for Black women to start screening at age 40.
You may also need additional imaging, such as a breast ultrasound or a breast MRI.
You can also see a primary care provider (PCP) or OBGYN between ages 25 and 35 for a personalized breast cancer risk assessment to see if even earlier than age 40 mammograms are recommended.
Breast Cancer Awareness Month includes men. Men can get breast cancer. While a screening mammogram is not recommended, a chest wall exam is!
