Never Run Out Again: Safe Medication Delivery to Your Door
If you take prescription medication, it’s important to always have enough on hand. But keeping track of refills and making trips to the pharmacy can be hard.
What if your medicines could come straight to you — no standing in line, no extra travel, no stress?
Mail-order delivery — offered by licensed, registered pharmacies — is a convenient, safe alternative that brings your prescriptions to your doorstep. MetroHealth provides this service to help you stay on track with the medications you need most.
Here, John Leahy, PharmD, Mail Order Pharmacy Supervisor, shares what you need to know about getting medications delivered to your home.
The Prescription Problem: Running Out of Medication
You know how important it is to take your medication exactly as your doctor tells you. But life gets busy. You miss a dose, forget to call in a refill, or realize too late that your pharmacy is closed. All these things can make it easy to run out.
Even when you do remember you need a refill, getting to the pharmacy can still be hard, Dr. Leahy says. Some neighborhoods don’t have pharmacies nearby, which makes access even more difficult.
“Mail-order medications can be the answer for these individuals or for people who have trouble remembering to get their next round of medication on time,” he says. “With our program, we handle the logistics, and they don’t have to worry.”
A Convenient, Safe Solution: Mail-Order Medication
According to Dr. Leahy, mail-order medication programs can help solve many common problems people face when refilling prescriptions:
- It’s affordable. For many insurance plans, there’s no additional cost to participate in a mail-order program. You can also save money by getting a 90-day supply.
- It’s convenient and safe. Your medicine comes from a local, licensed MetroHealth pharmacy. If you have questions, call a pharmacist anytime.
- It supports your health. Research shows that people who use mail-order services are more likely to take their medications as directed.
Get started today! To start receiving prescriptions at home, ask your provider to select MetroHealth’s Home Delivery service as your preferred pharmacy. Or call 216-957-MEDS (6337) and choose option 4 to start your order.
Mail-Order Medications: What’s Safe to Deliver?
About two-thirds of Americans take at least one medication for a long-term health condition. These medications are usually taken daily, don’t require emergency use, and don’t need refrigeration. Because of this, they travel well through mail.
“These maintenance medications are the bread-and-butter of a mail-order system,” Dr. Leahy says.
Common medications safely delivered by mail include:
- Allergy medications
- Birth control pills
- Heart and blood pressure medications
- Cholesterol-lowering medications
- Diabetes medications, including insulin and Metformin
- Acid reflux and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) medications
- Long-term mental health medications (SSRIs and SNRIs)
- Maintenance inhalers for asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
Some medications can still be mailed but need special preparation:
- Controlled substances (rules vary by state)
- Refrigerated medications, such as some GLP-1s, injectables or certain insulins
- Urgent medications, including antibiotics
The MetroHealth Difference
Certified for Medications that Must Be Kept Cold
Unlike many programs, MetroHealth has the resources to package and safely deliver cold-temperature medications. That means we can give you easy access to GLP-1s, several types of insulin and refrigerated eye drops.
“We are 100% certified for cold-chain management,” Dr. Leahy says. “Our shipping goes through rigorous quarterly testing, including extreme hot and cold temperature testing.”
Direct Communication with Providers
MetroHealth’s pharmacy team uses the same electronic health record your providers use. That means they see updates right away when your doctor changes or stops a medication. Pharmacies outside the MetroHealth system don’t have access to this information.
“We see when your provider discontinues or makes a change to your medication. Outside pharmacies don’t have the full picture,” Dr. Leahy said.
Better Medication Management Through Reminders
We have several tools to help you stay on track.
- Auto-refill: Sign up to have your medications refilled automatically.
- Compliance packs: Medications are sorted into easy-to-open pouches labeled by time of day. Every month, your medication list is reviewed and updated based on your provider’s notes. One of our pharmacists or technicians will call you to answer questions and discuss medication updates.
- Reminders: The last week of your bubble pack includes a highlighted reminder message. You also receive a message in your MyChart account. You can confirm your address and refill request by two-way texting.
Fast, Reliable Delivery
To deliver your medications quickly, MetroHealth partners with FedEx and the U.S. Postal Service for three-to-five-day deliveries.
We also operate our own courier service with 30 drivers who can bring urgent medications, like antibiotics, directly to your door if you live within a 40-mile radius.
Secure Sign-Up and Safe Delivery
Sign up takes place through your private MyChart account. You can even request a delivery that requires your signature, so medications aren’t left unattended.
Price Transparency at MetroHealth
When you sign up for our mail-order program, you’ll know your costs upfront.
Here’s what patients can expect:
- No upfront pricing surprises. We clearly outline your medication costs in your MyChart account. We call you prior to shipping to confirm pricing and payment information. And we alert you to price increases of 50% or more.
- Clear explanations. Our pharmacists review generic options, formulary choices, co-pays and out-of-pocket costs. These details help you make the most informed decisions about your medications.
- Budget-friendly planning. Our pharmacy team works with you to create the most affordable medication plan. By helping you control costs, we support your efforts to stick with your prescription regimen and care plan.
- 90-Day refill advantage. Most medications are shipped in 90-day supplies, which can mean fewer co-pays and better coverage from most insurance companies, including Medicare.
The Impact of Mail-Order Programs
The goal of MetroHealth’s mail-order service is to support your long-term health. When medications arrive at your door, you’re more likely to take them on time and stay on track with your treatment plan.
“It’s the convenience factor for patients that they don’t have to leave the comfort of their home or try to find or take public transportation,” Dr. Leahy says. “That convenience increases adherence. And that’s a win for us. Our mail-order department has the highest adherence rates when compared to retail pharmacy locations.”
