At MetroHealth, our patients have an advantage they won’t get anywhere else: They receive not only today’s best treatments and therapies, but they get access to tomorrow’s as well. We believe that research is key to finding the best solutions for our patients. Many of our physicians actively participate in research projects and clinical trials, and patients are referred to trials of new therapies if appropriate.

Our fellowship programs train a select group of post-residency physicians who wish to specialize further in spinal cord injury, brain injury medicine and pain management.
  • Functional electrical stimulation (FES) and neuroprosthetics to help stroke patients regain the use of their upper and lower limbs
  • Peripheral nerve stimulation for musculoskeletal pain management, including post-stroke and spinal cord injury shoulder pain
  • Neuroprosthetic devices for spinal cord injury, for improved breathing, bladder and bowel control, and to improved functionality of upper and lower limbs and the trunk
  • Electrical blocks for pain control and management of muscle spasticity
Specialized Therapies

Our physical, occupational and speech therapists specialize in treating complex orthopedic, traumatic, and neurologic conditions. Many have additional expertise and training in stroke, brain injury or spinal cord injury rehabilitation. This allows us to offer specific therapies not found elsewhere in the area, including:

  • Balance therapy
  • Driving rehabilitation
  • Hand therapy
  • Pelvic rehabilitation
  • Swallowing therapy
  • Vestibular rehabilitation
Training Tomorrow’s Leaders

Cutting-edge research is only one part of building the future. We also produce the specialists who treat rehabilitation patients both here and across the country. Since 1958, the MetroHealth System has trained over 220 physiatrists. Approximately 75 percent of rehabilitation physicians in Northeast Ohio trained at MetroHealth.

With a 100 percent 5-year pass rate on part I of the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation subspecialty certification examination, our graduates are in demand at top medical centers throughout the United States. These resident physicians are a key part of our team. Each floor of the Institute is staffed with at least two residents at all times, allowing us to provide 24/7 onsite physician coverage. No other local rehabilitation facility can provide this level of care.

Our fellowship programs train a select group of post-residency physicians who wish to specialize further in spinal cord injury, brain injury medicine and pain management.
