When it comes to a stroke, time is critical. The quicker you get treatment, the better your chances are for a full recovery.

There’s no time like the present May is American Stroke Month to learn the warning signs of stroke.

Warning signs of stroke

Keep B.E. F.A.S.T. in mind for these early warning signs:

  • Balance – loss of balance or falling
  • Eyes – painless loss of vision or eyes drifting to the side
  • Face – facial droop.  Is the smile lopsided?
  • Arm – arm weakness, numbness and/or clumsiness.
  • Speech – sudden slurring or inability to make sense when speaking and/or understand others.
  • Time – time to call 911
Remember, call 911 immediately if you or a loved one experiences any stroke warning signs to get to the closest stroke center.

Why being stroke certified matters

Where you go for stroke care is as important as how quickly you get there. MetroHealth is a *Comprehensive Stroke Center. Research shows that people treated at a Comprehensive Stroke Center receive better quality of care and have a better chance of improved outcomes.

*The designation means that the facilities have met criteria designed by the American Stroke Association and American Heart Association. Certified by The Joint Commission, our Comprehensive Stroke Center offers complete stroke services — from the latest 24/7 emergency treatments to comprehensive stroke rehabilitation.

All MetroHealth Emergency Departments are stroke certified. They are recognized for the level of initial care they provide for stroke victims. Our advanced teams quickly recognize the signs of stroke, diagnose a stroke and begin treatment.
