Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in America. A new program at MetroHealth aims to save lives by offering quick and easy low-dose lung cancer screenings.
Screenings can detect lung cancer early, when it is more likely to be curable. The American Lung Association says if lung cancer is caught before it spreads, the likelihood of surviving 5 years or more improves to 60 percent. Unfortunately, only 6% of the 8 million people at high-risk for lung cancer in the United States are screened. The statistics are starker for Black Americans, Latinos and Asian Americans, who are even less likely to be diagnosed early.
“MetroHealth’s new low-dose lung cancer screenings are an easy and effective way to diagnose patients early, when it is most treatable,” said Jonathan Glaab, MD, MetroHealth radiologist. “The scan takes less than 10 minutes. Walk in, stand for the screening, and you’re done.”
Should I get screened?
Please talk with your physician about a lung cancer screening if you meet the following conditions:
- Did you smoke a pack a day for 20 years? or
- Smoke now or have quit within the last 15 years
- Are 50 years old or older?
These quick and easy screenings are recommended for current or former smokers and covered by Medicare, most state Medicaid programs, or private insurance.
Ask your primary care provider if you qualify for the low-dose screening. To make an appointment with your doctor, call 216-778-5500 or sign in to MyChart.
