15 Easy Ways to Stay Active Every Day + Cleveland Metroparks Trail Challenge
Let’s Move!
After a long Cleveland winter spent wrapped in blankets and relaxing on the couch, it’s time to get moving again.
Sitting or lying down for long periods is called a sedentary lifestyle. Too much sitting can weaken muscles, raise your risk of type 2 diabetes and affect your heart health.
The good news? You don’t need big changes to feel better. Small steps can add up. Try these 15 simple ways to move more throughout your day.
5 Ways to Be More Active at Home
One of the easiest ways to move more is to add movement to things you already do every day.
- Stretch, do yoga, lift light weights, or walk or jog in place while watching TV
- Do squats or lunges while brushing your teeth
- Play with your pets
- Play outside with your kids or neighbors
- Take a walk after dinner alone or with family or friends
5 Ways to Be More Active at Work
Many jobs involve a lot of sitting. These ideas can help you move more during the workday.
- Stand up, stretch or walk around for a few minutes every hour
- Walk while talking on the phone or suggest a walking meeting
- Use a standing desk, if available
- Take the stairs instead of the elevator
- Change your routine: park farther away, get off the bus one stop early or use the farthest restroom
5 Ways to Be More Active for Fun
Stuck in a TV-watching rut? Try something new. Your shows will still be there later.
- For low-impact options, try yoga, swimming or water aerobics
- Join a team–local adult leagues offer sports like soccer, basketball, tennis and pickleball
- Explore Cleveland by visiting the zoo, museums, farmer’s markets or historic sites
- Take classes such as dance, Tai Chi, karate or rock climbing
- Hit the trails! Hiking is a great way to raise your heart rate, lower stress and see why Cleveland is called “The Forest City”

Your Questions Answered
Q. How do I find motivation to work out?
A. Choose activities you enjoy. When something is fun, you’re more likely to keep doing it.
Q. What if I’m shy about trying something new?
A. That feeling is normal. Start small. Visit a park you’ve been to before. Watch an adult-league soccer game before joining. Set a goal like walking after dinner twice a week. Remember–everyone starts somewhere, and most people are focused on themselves—not you.
Q. What if I can’t exercise due to an injury?
A. You may benefit from seeing a physical therapist. Depending on your injury, they can suggest safe exercises, hands-on treatments and ways to help you heal and return to movement.
