Expert Guidance for an Easy Skin Care Routine

Your skin is your body’s largest organ. So, taking care of it is important. A simple skin care routine can help protect your skin from acne, aging, redness and sun damage.

With so many products and social media trends, it can be hard to know what to use. Julie Iacullo, MD, a dermatologist at MetroHealth, shares tips to help you choose what’s right for your skin. She also explains how MetroHealth can help.

Clearing Confusion for Clearer Skin

Many people feel unsure about skin care. MetroHealth dermatologists often see patients who use products that don’t work well together. These products may not help—and sometimes they can make skin worse by causing redness, irritation or clogged pores.

Dr. Iacullo says the key to good skin care is finding products that work for you.

“You don’t have to be very fancy. Use a gentle face wash and gentle moisturizer,” she says. “Your skin care products don’t need a lot of active ingredients in them.”

For smooth, healthy skin, she suggests including:

  • Sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher): Helps prevent sunburn, skin cancer and early aging
  • Exfoliants (like glycolic or salicylic acid): Remove dead skin that can clog pores
  • Hyaluronic acid: Keeps your skin soft and hydrated
  • Niacinamide (vitamin B3): Helps calm redness and control oil
  • Retinol: Helps new skin grow and can fade dark spots
  • Vitamin C: Helps protect skin from sun damage

Dr. Iacullo says it’s best to avoid products with alcohol or strong fragrances, which can irritate your skin. Wash your face and apply products once or twice a day. Doing it more often can make your skin worse.

Simple, High-Quality Skin Care Options

Finding good skin care products can be difficult. Stores and online shops offer anti-wrinkle creams, cleansers and moisturizers. Even if you know what ingredients to look for, it’s not always easy to pick the right one. Some prescription products can also be expensive.

MetroHealth dermatologists have made it easier.

“There are so many products out there, but it’s hard to know which ones are good quality,” Dr. Iacullo says. “MetroHealth dermatologists worked together to create pharmaceutical-grade skin care products you can trust, and you don’t need a prescription to get them.”

These dermatologist-designed products include cleansers, moisturizers and serums. These products, designed by dermatologists, include cleansers, moisturizers, and serums. They are backed by research and made to keep your routine simple while helping with common skin concerns.

Some of these products include ingredients often found in prescriptions, making them stronger than many store-bought options. They’re also affordable and easy to find.

“When I’m counseling patients, I might suggest a product that has a natural ingredient like azelaic acid. It treats acne and rosacea by reducing inflammation. But it’s expensive as a prescription. And it may be lower quality in off-the-shelf brands,” she says. “It’s nice that I can tell patients that our team has created high-quality, affordable products that I trust.”

Keeping Your Skin Care Routine Simple and Consistent

Good skin care doesn’t have to be complicated. Using more products doesn’t always mean better results. The key is to find a few products that work for your skin and use them every day.
