Level 1 Trauma Center vs. Emergency Room: What’s the Difference?

Ready for Life’s Toughest Moments

When a serious injury happens, every second matters.

At MetroHealth, our emergency and trauma teams work side by side to make sure patients get the right level of care as quickly as possible.

As the region’s most experienced, premier Level 1 Trauma Center, MetroHealth has the expertise and resources to care for the most serious, life-threatening injuries at a moment’s notice.

Why Choose a Trauma Center Instead of an ER?

Most people are familiar with the emergency room (ER). ER teams treat a wide range of urgent health issues from broken bones to heart attacks and strokes.

But when injuries are life-threatening, such as major car crashes, severe falls, or serious wounds, a Trauma Center provides an added level of care.

As a Level 1 Trauma Center, MetroHealth offers specialized surgeons and care teams available 24/7, immediate access to advanced imaging and operating rooms, and highly coordinated care for the most serious injuries.

In many cases, EMS teams will bring patients directly to a trauma center to ensure they receive this advanced care as quickly as possible.

A Team Ready at a Moment’s Notice

When a critically injured patient arrives, a full team is ready.

Paramedics, nurses, emergency physicians, trauma surgeons, radiology experts, and respiratory therapists all come together at once – each with a specific role.

“Trauma care is a team sport,” says Craig Bates, MD, MS, FACEP, MetroHealth Emergency Medicine physician and EMS Division Director. “Everyone works together quickly and seamlessly to care for the patient.”

In one case, a patient arrived with multiple serious injuries and needed immediate intervention.

“It was clear they needed advanced care right away,” Dr. Bates says. “The team moved quickly, and everything worked as it should.”

The patient was stabilized and moved to intensive care. Months later, Dr. Bates learned the patient had recovered from their traumatic injuries.

“Hearing that they were doing well meant a lot to all of us who were part of their care,” he says.

Care That Starts Before You Arrive

Life-saving care often begins before a patient even reaches the hospital.

MetroHealth trained Cleveland EMS to give whole blood at the scene of an injury, and Cleveland EMS is the only team in Ohio that can do this.

“Patients don’t have to be in our hospital to benefit from what we do,” Dr. Bates says. “We share our training and support.” Saving lives is not usually one heroic act. “It’s a system working together,” he says.

Trauma care also includes teaching the community. At a MetroHealth lead bleeding control class, a 17-year-old learned how to stop severe bleeding, and just a few months later, he used that training to save two lives.

“That’s the power of a trauma team,” Dr. Bates says. “We support the public, EMS, and each other.”

More Than Medical Care

For most people, a trauma event is one of the hardest moments of their life.

At MetroHealth, care goes beyond treating injuries to supporting recovery through our nationally renowned rehabilitation program.

MetroHealth’s Trauma Recovery Center helps people heal after serious injuries or violence by offering free support, counseling, and connections to helpful resources. They work with patients and families to build support, improve recovery, and help people get back to a healthy life.

It also includes social workers who support patients and families, chaplain services for comfort and guidance, and care teams who help navigate complex, emotional situations.

“We’re not just focused on the injury,” Dr. Bates says. “We’re here for the whole person and their family.”

Advanced Care When It Matters Most

Most people will never need trauma care. But when the unexpected happens, it’s important to know this level of expertise is available when it matters most.

At MetroHealth, our trauma and emergency teams work together to deliver fast, coordinated, and compassionate care, so patients and families can feel confident they’re in the right place.
